Need web page/blog help

I want to add a news type of feature to my home page but want it to look and act kind of like a blog. Check out http://www.jwtt.com/ and check out the left hand column to see what I mean. I have absolutely 0 experience with blogging and the quick research I just did on blog software makes it seem like they are stand alone type of programs/pages and I want it to integrate with my regular home page.

So, do any of you that are smarter with blogging and web page design know how I can go about doing this?
