putting together my first pc...suggestions?

Postby delvryboy » Wed May 10, 2006 9:09 pm

i don't do any heavy gaming, or anything too intense for that matter. i basically want to leave my options open.

this is what i have in my possesion so far...

XION ATX case w/ 480w PS

intel pentium D 805 dual core

ECS RC410L/800-M mobo

2GB(2x1GB) mushkin ddr2 pc4200 dual channel ram

80gb samsung sata 7,200rpm HD (i got this on a hell of a deal, but i could scrap it for a 200gb maxtor) or i could run dual 74gb raptors later down the line( my favorite option)

soundblaster audigy 3 soundcard

all i need now is a video card.....i need suggestions. i want to keep it under $150, and like i said, i don't do anything intense. i basically want to not use the embedded graphics on the mobo.

also, how did i do for my first compy?

Doesn't look like you did too bad and did some digging/research before you bought...

Are you running that microATX board in a ATX case or does Xion make a micro?

Anywho... If it were me (as I was pondering doing this myself just a bit ago...)

Get something like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102646

And soft mod it to unlock the pipelines as explained here:

http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/827/1/page_1_introduction/index.html

You're smart enough to handle doing it, and if it doesn't work you aren't out anything as normally you can just revert - and if it does you've gained more for your buck still. :)

Nice part is you get a damn good performance boost without having to overclock.
Yo.

the case is an ATX, suppossedly will fit micro and mini boards. i haven't done a test fit yet though.

thanks for the heads up on the vid card, prolly the route i'm going to take.

as for my hard drive, an electronics store here has maxtor 200gb sata's on sale for $66 each. i think i'll pick up a pair and run them in a raid config.(mirrorred) for reliability.

The X800GTO2 is a good deal and even better if you can flash the bios to enable the extra pipelines

well, time to say "goodnight". gotta steal the dvd-rw from this compy, button up the new one.... wish me luck.

btw - ended up getting a pair of 100gb maxtor drives(39.99 ea), going to go with a raid 0 configuration. imma pick up a 500gb external for back-ups in a few weeks.

bye :)
